English-Spanish interpreter for engineering meetings

Over the past few days I’ve been interpreting at the Vandellòs nuclear power plant to the south of Barcelona (Spain) in meetings covering a range of technical topics. A few years ago I interpreted at the Ascó nuclear power plant, so I’m now familiar with Catalonia’s two nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power plants undergo a peer review process every four years, which is carried out by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

The personnel carrying out these audits work at nuclear power plants and therefore have an in-depth knowledge of how they operate.

The peer review process lasts more than two weeks and covers all aspects of plant safety − from radiation protection and machinery maintenance to employee training.

The working language of the meetings is generally English, so a team of interpreters is on hand to translate between English and Spanish.

Given my background, I was assigned to the engineering team. Assisting them as their translator, I attended meetings about radiation protection, chemical control, electronic boards, etc.

To do this kind of work you need to be able to follow highly technical conversations and be familiar with specialised vocabulary (as well as a wide range of topics, since we had a meeting almost every hour and each one covered a different topic) in both languages.

I was delighted to have been contracted for the second time by the interpreting agency Anglia Solution, who was entrusted with providing a team of interpreters. It was also a pleasure to work alongside my colleagues and to share leisure time with them.

For this post I chose a less formal photo than usual − views of the plant from the house where I and the other interpreters were staying. They may not be the prettiest of views but I like them. 😊
