It’s here! My translation of the maths book Linear Algebra: Theory, Intuition, Code

My translation of another mathematics book (the fourth, and this time on linear algebra), is now available to buy. One of the things I enjoy most is translating scientific and technical books, so it’s always exciting to receive a hard copy when the book is printed. 😊

This latest book is a highly practical course in which each topic, such as machine learning and data science, is linked to its applications. It also provides the necessary MATLAB and Python code for implementing what you are learning, and includes both mathematics and programming exercises.

This book is a bit different to the other three textbooks I have translated from English to Spanish, for a few reasons:

• It’s university level, which meant I had to go back over some concepts from when I studied algebra as part of my bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences.

• It had to be clear in all Spanish-speaking countries (mainly Latin America). So, when deciding on the translation for each term, I had to make sure it would be understood in the different countries. This involved reading a huge amount of lecture notes from Mathematics universities in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Spain, among others.

• The tone is relaxed and engaging and the text is peppered with cultural references (travel, music, etc.). I maintained the same tone in the translation, which is no easy task given that colloquial language is what differs the most between Spanish-speaking countries. And I adapted cultural references when necessary (even a song by Spanish band Jarabe de Palo!), and always with the author’s permission, of course.

• The book was written in LaTeX. Although we had initially agreed that I would do the translation in Word, I realised that doing it this way would result in many errors and mean more work for the author. So, after some testing, we decided I would translate the text directly in LaTex, with a workflow and review process that would be more efficient and less likely to give rise to errors.
